Steps of the Ganesh Puja

The purohit leads the rituals, chanting mantras and guiding the participants step-by-step.

1. Ganapati Invocation (Avahan)

• The purohit invokes Lord Ganesha by chanting Vedic mantras and the Ganapati Atharvasirsha.
• Participants are instructed to sprinkle holy water on the idol, symbolizing purification and sanctification.

2. Sankalpa (Taking the Vow)

• The purohit asks participants to take a vow (Sankalpa), stating the purpose of the puja and seeking blessings.
• The purohit chants the Sankalpa mantra, and participants repeat after them.

3. Ganapati Puja Rituals

a. Pran Pratishtha (Energizing the Idol)

• The purohit guides the participants to perform Pran Pratishtha, infusing the idol with divine energy through mantras and offerings.

b. Offering Puja Items

• Participants offer items like:
  • Flowers and durva grass for purity and auspiciousness.
  • Kumkum and turmeric for sanctity.
  • Modaks and fruits as prasad (sacred food).
  • Incense sticks and diya for light and fragrance.

c. Chanting Ganesh Mantras

• The purohit leads chants like:
  • "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah"
  • Ganapati Atharvasirsha or Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names of Lord Ganesha).

d. Aarti

• The purohit performs an Aarti (prayer with a flame), guiding participants to do the same at their location.
• Participants sing Ganesh Aarti songs like "Jai Ganesh Deva."

4. Ganesh Homam (Optional)

• If feasible, the purohit performs a small fire ritual (homam) or guides participants to offer symbolic items into a diya flame.

5. Prasad Distribution

• After the puja, participants distribute prasad to family members and friends.

6. Ganapati Visarjan (Immersion)

• If it’s a festival like Ganesh Chaturthi, the purohit guides the process for symbolic visarjan:
  • If using a clay idol, it can be immersed in water.
  • Eco-friendly methods (e.g., dissolving the idol in a bucket) are encouraged.

How Purohits Perform the Puja Online

• Guided Instructions:

  • The purohit provides clear, step-by-step guidance throughout the ceremony.
  • Participants replicate rituals like offering flowers, lighting lamps, and chanting mantras.

• Real-Time Chanting:

  • The purohit chants all mantras live, allowing participants to follow along or repeat after them.

• Interactive Communication:

  • Participants can ask questions or clarify doubts during the session.

• Recorded Options:

  • If live participation is challenging, some purohits provide recorded sessions tailored to the participant’s requirements.

Post-Puja Guidance

• Blessings and Guidance:

  • The purohit gives blessings and suggests ways to maintain devotion, such as daily Ganesh prayers or regular offerings.

• Donation or Dakshina:

  • Participants give dakshina (offering) to the purohit, often done through online payment.
