How Purohit Performs Rudrabhishek Puja at Kumbha Mela 2024

1. Preparations:

   • A sacred area is set up, often near the riverbanks of the Kumbha Mela locations such as Prayagraj (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, or Nashik.
   • Shiva Linga (symbolizing Lord Shiva) is installed on an altar, and the altar is decorated with flowers, sacred threads, and incense.
   • Ritual items include milk, water, honey, ghee, sandalwood paste, coconut, betel leaves, fruits, dried grass, sesame seeds, and rice grains.
   • Kalash (holy pot) is placed at the center, representing the sanctity of the ritual, filled with water, mango leaves, and a coconut.

2. Purification (Achamana):

   • The priest (Purohit) begins with Achamana, a purification process that involves sipping water and sprinkling it on oneself, ensuring that the ritual participants are physically and spiritually clean.
   • A sankalpa (intention or vow) is made by the Purohit, along with the devotees, to invoke Lord Shiva's blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual growth.

3. Invocation of Lord Ganesha:

   • Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is first worshipped to ensure that the puja proceeds without any hindrances.
   • The Purohit chants Ganapati mantras and offers flowers and fruits.

4. Rudrabhishek Ritual:

   • The Rudra (a form of Shiva) is worshipped with the Rudra Abhishek (ritual bath), which involves the pouring of various sacred substances on the Shiva Linga:
     • Water is poured while chanting mantras like "Om Namah Shivaya."
     • Milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar (known as Panchamrit) are poured over the Shiva Linga, signifying purification and offering.
     • Holy water from the Ganga is poured over the Linga, representing the river Ganga’s divine blessings.
   • The Rudra Mantras are recited repeatedly, which include Sri Rudram and Chamakam, prayers asking for health, wealth, prosperity, peace, and divine grace.

5. Chanting of Mantras:

   • Sri Rudram and Chamakam, which are Vedic hymns that praise Lord Rudra (Shiva), are chanted in unison. The priest may recite these mantras several times, depending on the importance and purpose of the ritual.

6. Offering of Bilva Leaves:

   • Bilva leaves (Bael leaves) are sacred to Lord Shiva and are offered on the Shiva Linga during the ritual.

7. Aarti:

   • The ritual culminates in the singing of the Shiva Aarti and Om Jai Shiv Omkara, a devotional song praising Lord Shiva.
